Smoking Ceremony

Smoking ceremonies were performed by the Kuku Yalanji people as a way of spiritually cleansing people when entering unknown country but also, during a wedding.  The smoking ceremony is performed to create a lifelong bond between the betrothed couple. Today non-Aboriginal people may also take part in these special events to ensure a special spiritual bond for the couple on their wedding day, which is said to last forever.

Baral Mardjanda - Aboriginal Guided Rainforest Walk

Join an Aboriginal guide for an easy walk to the property's natural waterfall. Gain a glimpse into the local Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal history, culture, traditions and rainforest life. Learn about the natural environment, how the Aboriginals used & connected with the land & see exotic plants that date back to the pre-dinosaur era along with rare & endangered wildlife

Walkabout Cultural Adventures 

Half day or full day 4WD safari visiting the rainforest, rivers, streams and coastline in local Kuku Yalanji country. Learn about the relationships the local Aboriginal people have with this pristine environment in a relaxed, interactive atmosphere with local Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal guide. Tours can also include cultural hunting along the coast.

Daintree River Cruise - (Offered by a variety of local, reputable river cruise operators.)

Experience the majestic Daintree River with a 1 hour cruise at all different times of the day or chose a 2 hour morning river cruise or 2 hour evening river cruise and experience not only the variety of wildlife, but the environment at sunrise or sunset. All guides pride themselves on knowledgeable and friendly service.

Great Barrier Reef Excursions

With a variety of reef operators, chose to explore one of the “wonders of the world”. From the renowned Quicksilver to smaller, more intimate operators such as Poseidon, Sailaway, Wavelength, Calypso, Synergy and Haba. You can choose to snorkel, dive or simply just relax on one of the islands.

Ecotourism Initiatives

• Location: 30 acres of lush rainforest, 90 minutes drive of north Cairns, surrounded by World Heritage Listed Daintree rainforest, adjacent to the Daintree River.

• Design: Architecturally designed buildings to capitalize on the unique site, minimize interruption to the ancient fragile environment and to capitalize on the valley’s own micro-climate.

• Ownership: a small Australian business, family-owned and operated. 13 years of sustainable ownership and development as a premium world class tourism product.

• Crowned "the World’s Leading Eco Lodge” in the 2007 and 2009 World Travel Awards – World Green Category, and is a finalist again in 2008 – again the only Australian property.

• The Lodge’s has it’s own self-imposed environmental criteria of practices that minimize environmental impact in line with “RRR” (Reduce, Re-Use, Re-Cycle), built from ACCC guidelines, Responsible Travel Criteria, NEAP, Greenhouse Challenge and World Ecotourism Criteria.

• Self-sufficient pristine water supply for operations and guest usage and with tertiary treated waste management.

Through the formation of partnerships with the local rainforest Aboriginals aimed at creating sustainable tourism opportunities by preserving the pristine rainforest and Aboriginal culture, this is a perfect example of a community project for the betterment of future generations.  The continued interaction with the local people adds a cultural dimension to Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa and gives an opportunity for the Kuku Yalanji people to relearn and share their culture.

Located just 90 minutes drive (113km) north of Cairns International Airport.  Only 40 minutes north of Port Douglas (45km), gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.  3 kms south of Daintree Village.  The lodge has a sealed road which runs all the way to the property.  Follow the highway north from Cairns past the Port Douglas turnoff, and follow the signs to Daintree Village.

The Cook highway from Cairns offers a feast of scenery ranging from secluded palm fringed beaches, hidden coves and rugged headlands, the rich green of lush sugar-cane fields, through to the mist shrouded rainforest clad mountains.  Rated as one of Australia's top scenic drives.
