Eco-Friendly Construction, Renovation and Maintenance

Many hospitality providers try to include the fabric of their own buildings in their ethical and environmentally focused policies.

As with many elements of eco-friendly and ethical-accommodation some elements of the construction of the accommodation is based on local factors and other maybe down to more universal principles.  Usually the universal principles feed down into the local factors of the accommodations either construction, renovation and or maintenance.

Construction policies can include the following elements:

• Hiring and contracting work to companies which have an environmental commitment as well as skills and specialisations within the field of sustainable construction.

• Using eco-friendly construction materials which have been produced using environmentally sensitive methods of production and distribution.

• Using materials used which are traceable to the source of their manufacture.

• Use of materials that are energy efficient in relation to their manufacture and transportation.

• The use of non-toxic materials and chemicals which are toxic to the environment.

• The use of materials which do not cause allergies.

• The use of locally sourced building materials.

• The use of renewable materials, eg straw for insulation or wood from sustainably managed forests.

• The minimisation of all forms of waste during construction.

• The reuse of existing materials, either within the building or within the immediate local area.

• Ensuring that all workers within the construction process have a safe work environment in which to work.

• Ensuring workers involved in the construction are all paid a fair wage for their work and are in no way exploited.
