Scandic Hotels is a hotel chain based in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

The main sphere of operations for the Scandic chain is in the Nordic and Northern European countries.  The majority of its hotels in are in either Sweden, Norway, Finland or Denmark, although it has branched out, the company also has a presence in Belgium and The Netherlands, Estonia, Northern Germany, Poland and Russia.

Since 1993, the Scandic company has been developing its sustainability policy it is certainly one of the most comprehensively constructed policy of its kind in the field of chain hotel hospitality within Europe, and without doubt leads the field for a "mid-range hotel chains".  The Scandic chain markets and promotes it social and environmental commitments as it has correctly foreseen the added value of well developed CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy.  The elements of the companies sustainability policy include every part of their business operations, from staff who are given sustainability training, construction and maintenance of hotels, stringent waste management, policy on energy and water consumption.  After being assessed in 2001 the breakfasts at all Swedish Scandic hotels received the KRAV ecological product certificate.  By 2004 all Swedish hotels had earned the  "Swan Ecolabel". Not all hotels within the Scandic hotel chain have been an environmental award, although the vast majority have and in those which are currently without the Scandic sustainability policy is in place to offer guests familiar with the brand and its ongoing commitment the peace of mind they expect.  The next biggest challenge that the company has set for itself is completely carbon neutral by 2025.  This is probably the most ambitious target set by any company of a comparable size in the world.  Whether they are successful, meeting the target will become clear in some years time.  The head start that they have made as a business in terms of embedding environmental measures through out their business will doubtless stand them in good stead, while they work towards this rather ambitious target.
