Matemwe Lodge is one of very few a resorts on the northern coast of Zanzibar.

Water Focused Recreation 

Ocean trips with snorkelling equipment can be easily arranged for you.  

You can sail to the local reef and discover the little island of Mnemba Atoll which is just off shore.  You can also snorkel straight from the beach. 

Diving trips can also be organised with a professional diving centre so you can discover firsthand the breathtaking underwater world of the Indian Ocean

Kayaks are also available to explore the crystal clear sea.  Which is full of soft and hard corals, sponges and anemones, you'll be amazed by the wealth of species in these waters.

You may find dolphins in the water or for lucky guests there may even be an opportunity to spot a whale passing by the reef (your best chance for whales is between August and October).

Community and Culture

You can visit the neighbouring village if you care to experience the local village life and the culture of Zanzibar island, you can learn more about the community projects that Matemwe is involved in.

From Matemwe, you can go on day-trips to the historic centre of Stone Town, Jozani Forest or Prison Island.

Spice Tour is also available, on which you can learn about the great variety of spices that the Zanzibar is famous for.

The lodge uses energy saving practices, to try an minimise it’s impact on the environment.  

Matemwe Lodge has a Fair Trade policy for all local procurement (foodstuffs, furniture, fittings and building materials.  

Currently Matemwe Lodge is currently investing $105,000.00 (US) into creating a new sewage treatment plant (including the necessary new waste water network), as well as a water treatment plant (filtration of water) to reuse all resort water of the property. 

Matemwe Lodge has a Waste Management system (collection, separation, containment and control). In addition, huge efforts from Matemwe Lodge have resulted in better waste management in the villages surrounding the a accommodation.

Matemwe Lodge is working together with the other hotels and lodges in the area to provide a means for any guest staying at the lodge to donate a mosquito net to a local family.

Besides buying the catch of the day from the local fishermen, the lodge has helped the village to get electricity and clean drinking water. It also assists in financing classrooms for the village school and sponsors promising students for further education.

The open-air restaurant overlooks the ocean. Seafood is its speciality, all produce is bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet, and dinner is a choice of main courses of fish, meat and vegetarian all meals mix African and European cuisine.

Matemwe is situated is in the north eastern part of Zanzibar Island.

Matemwe is easily reached via Taxi from Stone Town which is just 60 minutes away.
