Sustainable/Ethical Credentials
back to topWhen Sayari started in this area, the camp along with the Honeyguide Foundation started a vegetable program. The Honeyguide Foundation supplied the villages with seeds and showed the villagers how to grow different types of vegetables. The camp then arranged to buy these vegetables from them, for the guests and staff in the camp. The program has been a great success and has provided the local community with an additional income. The camp buys vegetables from the community now on almost a daily basis when the camp is full.
Inside the Serengeti National Park the Camp works hard to minimise its carbon footprint on the environment. It does this in the following ways:
- Sorting all waste, both bio and non-biodegradable. All non-biodegradable waste eg plastics, glass, rubber, foil/tin/metal, everything that can be recycled is then taken out of the park and recycled in Arusha.
- All non-biodegradable waste before leaving camp is weighed and recorded so that the camp owners can see changes in consumption and cut that consumption where possible.
- The Camp has installed a grey-water recycling unit and all grey-water gets cleaned and reused to cut down on water consumption.
- The hot water for all guest tents is solar heated to cut down on generator running times.
- The camp also has a very good environmentally friendly battery/inverter system that supplies power to the camp when the generator is off; again cutting down on the amount of hours the generator is used.
- Almost all products used within the various departments within the Camp are eco-friendly including some of the cleaning products.
