Sustainable/Ethical Credentials
back to topTswalu Kalahari arguably one of the most progressive Safari Lodges in Africa, it has developed three highly beneficial means of providing for the local community, the environment and the history of the Kalahari.
Community and People
In 2009 Tswalu Kalahari completed development of their new staff village. The houses have been designed on sound environmental principles. Each house is fitted with solar water heating and low energy lighting.
The new homes lie within easy reach of the creche, sports facilities and Primary Healthcare Clinic. Tswalu runs its own registered pre-school for all children. In addition there is a full-time teacher devoted to our adult literacy programme where learning is all computer-based.
Tswalu operates a fully equipped Primary Healthcare Clinic. All treatment is free of charge, for Tswalu residents and anyone from the surrounding area. The clinic also plays a vital role in the local community in conducting extensive educational awareness on HIV/AIDS as well as the importance of proper nutrition.
Environment and the Kalahari
In 2008, the Oppenheimer family created the Tswalu Foundation to develop and fund programmes of original research into the Kalahari.
Since its formation, the Tswalu Foundation has supported 26 separate, major academic studies. One the most notable was the investigation of predator and prey relationships amongst Kalahari lions at Tswalu to determine the optimal population size. This research is being done by the University of Pretoria.
Tswalu Kalahari has achieved Fair Trade in Tourism accreditation, based largely on this positive impact on the local community as well as environmental and conservation achievements.
