How to get to Tswalu Kalahari in South Africa
Via Plane
Tswalu Kalahari offers daily scheduled flights from both Johannesburg and Cape Town. The aircraft most frequently is a Pilatus PC12, often the lodges very own plane decorated with designs inspired by Bushman rock art. The Pilatus is pressurised and your journey will be in luxury and comfort.
In Cape Town, you will depart from the ExecuJet private hangar and in Johannesburg, go to the Anglo American hangar. Simple directions to each can be found here.
Flight Times to Tswalu
Cape Town Departs 11:00 - Arrives 13:00
Johannesburg Departs 13:00 - Arrives 14:30
The Cape Town return flight departs from Tswalu at 13.30 with a flying time to Cape Town of around 2 hours. The Johannesburg return flight departs from Tswalu 15.00 with a flying time of 1 hour 30 minutes to Johannesburg.
Tswalu Kalahari will run a scheduled service with a minimum of 2 passengers. Please arrive at the hangar one hour prior to your flight with us. The Anglo American hangar is open from 10.00 am.
Flight Rates include meeting you at Cape Town International Airport (please confirm if you would like us to do so) and transferring you to the ExecuJet private hangar (also upon request); a return transfer from ExecuJet to the International terminal is also available to you.
The same service is offered in Johannesburg where guest can be collected from OR Tambo International or any of the airport hotels. Please advise our reservations office of all your incoming flight details should you require a transfer.
Drinks and snacks are served on both Johannesburg and Cape Town flights to Tswalu Kalahari.
Alternative Flights & Private Charters
Guests can also take a scheduled SA Airlink or SA Express flight to Upington or Kimberley. Charter flights from Upington and Kimberley are then available. Please contact:

Tswalu’s Runway
Tswalu is fully accessible by your own private plane. Our CAA licensed tar runway is 2030 metres in length and can accommodate most corporate jets. Our runway lights have been calibrated and approved by CAA, so night landings can take place. Please call us to arrange such a landing.

Via Road
You can choose to drive to Tswalu. Recommended routes are detailed for you below:
Driving from Johannesburg
Distance approximately 650 km. Estimated driving time is 7 hours
Take M1 south, take Bloemfontein split and follow N12 and the signs to Kimberley
Stay on the N12, proceed through Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, and Wolmaransstad
At Wolmaransstad take R504 to Schweizer-Reneke, then R34 to Vryburg
From Vryburg, continue on the N14 to Kuruman
In Kuruman turn right at the first traffic light and follow the signs to Hotazel / Kgalagadi
Transfrontier Park (R31)
Kuruman is the last fuel stop before you reach Tswalu

Approximately 56km from Kuruman you will pass a sign on the left to Kathu & Deben (R380). A short distance past this signage you will cross over a railway bridge. After the bridge you will pass a sign on the right to Hotazel
Approximately 72km from Kuruman (before Blackrock) turn left onto the tar road R31 following signs to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Van Zylsrus
After about 42km you will see a turn to your left (indicated as Sonstraal on maps and GPS) – it is sign-posted Tswalu Kalahari Reserve on the D3335 route
After turning, the tar road ends and you continue on a gravel road
There is good mobile phone reception in this area; please call the lodge to advise where you are
After 10km on the gravel road, you will see an airstrip on your left and just beyond, the Tswalu staff housing complex on your right
A kilometer further you will see Tswalu signage “Tswalu Admin and Health Care Centre”
You will be met at this gate by your guide who will escort you further
From Upington take the N14 to Olifantshoek – approximately 165km

From Olifantshoek continue on N14 towards Kathu/Sishen
With the mine on your left, turn left towards Deben & Sishen airfield
Proceed through the next intersection (Kathu and mine) and continue for approximately 20km passing the airfield on the right Turn right at the sign that says “HOTAZEL” and proceed for 45km to the next T-junction
At the T-junction turn left towards “Hotazel and Gemsbok Park (R31)” and continue for approximately 16km
Before reaching Blackrock turn left onto the tar road signposted “R31 Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park” and “Van Zylsrus” After about 42km you will see a turn to your left (indicated as Sonstraal on maps and GPS) – it is sign-posted Tswalu Kalahari Reserve on the D3335 route
