The Scandic Hotel Chain is leading the field in relation to its status as a hotel chain that is committed to reducing its impact on the environment as well as promoting sustainable projects in the wider community.

The Scandic hotel chain first began to put their environmental policy together as early as 1993, since that time they have worked to expand and improve on it.  In 2007 they made the commitment that by 2025 the entire company would have a "zero carbon footprint".  Obviously they have been and are still building towards that target, some of the elements which will make their target achievable include the use of renewable energy sources, reducing waste of energy with low energy light bulbs, room key controlled lighting and reducing overall waste by sorting waste into 22 categories and recycling where possible,  and the fitting of low-flush toilets and efficient taps and showers.

In a wider community-focused dimension of Scandic hotels is their establishment of the international Stockholm Water Prize which is awarded every year in Stockholm to a person or organisation that has made "an outstanding contribution with regard to water safety and conservation."
